They cause the DNA gyrase to be unable to religate the nicks in DNA.
What are the first gen fluoroquinolones?
Ciprofloxacin.
What are the second gen fluoroquinolones?
Levofloxacin, gemifloxacin, and moxifloxacin.
What does fluoroquinolone target in gram negative bacteria?
DNA gyrase.
What does fluoroquinolone target in gram positive bacteria?
Topoisomerase IV.
Are fluoroquinolones safe for prefnant mothers?
They shouldn’t be used unless there is no choice.
Are fluoroquinolones safe for children?
It is not recommended due to risk of musculoskeletal damage.
What are some nervous-related fluoroquinolone contraindiciations?
CNS lesions/inflammation and epilepsy.
Should lactating mothers be given fluoroquinolones?
No, lactating mothers should not be given fluoroquinolones since it can affect their babies.
