Antibiotics Flashcards
Penicillin MOA
Beta-lactam ring interferes with peptidoglycan cross-linking in bacterial cell wall
How does ampicillin/amoxicillin differ from penicillin?
They are aminopenicillins, which add gram-negative (E coli, Salmonella) coverage and additionally Listeria (Gram+)
What are the extended spectrum penicillins?
Piperacillin and ticarcillin - anti-Pseudomonas and Proteus
Beta-lactamase inhibitors add activity to what organisms?
H flu
Bacteroides fragilis
Some Enterobacteriaceae (enteric Gram-)
How is vancomycin “red man syndrome” prevented?
Decrease rate of infusion
Administer H1-antagonist (eg diphenhydramine)
Fluoroquinolone MOA
Inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase II, inhibiting DNA replication
What antibiotics cover anaerobes?
- Metronidazole
- Clindamycin
- Pip-tazo (Zosyn)
