Antibiotic Flashcards
What is Benzylpenicillin (Penicillin G) used to treat and what kind of antibiotic is it?
Mainly used to great gram positive bacteria. (streptococcus pneumoniae) and Neisseria meningitdis
Many gram negative bacteria are resistant.
It is a Beta Lactam.
What is amoxicillian used to treat?
Gram negative bacteria and streptococci and enterococci (which are gram positive)
Amipicllian is used to treat?
Gram negative bacteria
gram positive-streptococci and enterococci
What is co-amoxiclav used to treat?
Gram negative
It is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (beta-lactamase enzyme inhibitor)
What does flucloxacillin treat?
the first choice treatment for Staphylococci
What is flucloxacillin?
A modified form of penicillin that is resistant to beta-lactamase.
What does piperacillin treat?
Broad spectrum treatment, has extended gram negative cover
What two beta-lactams can be used to treat most bacteria?
Imipenem
Meropenem
What does teicoplanin treat?
Gram positive bacteria only
What is vancomycin used to treat?
Gram positive bacteria only as gram negative are resistant
What are cephalosporins used to treat?
Gram positive and gram negative bacteria
