Acute inflammation 2 Flashcards
What are the immediate systemic effects of acute inflammation?
Pyrexia
General feeling of being unwell/malaise
Neutrophilia- increased white blood cell count
What are the longer term effects of acute inflammation?
Lymphadenopathy
Weightloss
Anaemia
What are the potential complications of acute inflammation?
Septic shock(part of a severe type of sepsis) /sepsis
bacteraemia
septicaemia
Toxaemia
Give 3 examples of acute inflammation mediators that are released from cells in the inflamed area and what they do
Histamine- causes vasodilation and increases permeability
Serotonin- causes vasoconstriction to prevent leakage from a damaged vessel
Nitric oxide- relaxes smooth muscles
Given an example of an endothelial cell mediator used in inflammation
ICAM-1 helps neutrophils to adhere to endothelium
