Antibacterial Prescribing Flashcards
What is the difference between empiric and pathogen directed antibiotic choice?
Empiric - is typically drugs that cover a large spectrum without much specificity
pathogen directed is prescribing a drug with likely pathogen in mind for that location.
What are common reasons for drug failures?
Drug Choice - wrong susceptibility for site of infection, emergence of resistance, and multiple organism infection
Host Factors - host suppressed immune response, medical devices housing infection, and/or abscess of infection
What are the factors needed to consider for abx choice?
- Resistance pattern
- Age
- Renal/Liver function
- Route (IV, IM, PO)
What are the common drug treatments for UTIs?
1st Choice - TMP/SMX
2nd Choice - Nitrofurantoin, Fosfomycin, Ciprofloxacin
What are common drugs used to treat MRSA?
Vancomycin
Linezolid
Daptomycin
Tigecycline
Common treatment options for community acquired MRSA?
Oral Drugs primarily used for outpatient treatment
- Linezolid
- Doxycyline/Minocycline
- Clindamycin
- TMP/SMX
