Benzodiazepine Indications
A
• Reduce anxiety. • Induce sedation, relax muscles, inhibit convulsions • Treatment of alcohol/ drug withdrawal symptoms • Safer than sedative- hypnotics

• Sedation • Drowsiness • Ataxia • Dizziness • Irritability • Blood dyscrasias • Habituation and increased intolerance

Benzodiazepine - Nursing Indications
A
• Administer @ bedtime to alleviate daytime sedation • Greatest harm occurs when combine with alcohol or other CNS depressants • Avoid driving or working around equipment • Gradually taper drug therapy due to withdrawal effects – do not stop suddenly • Used only as short-term and as supplemental to other meds
