Discussed 3 responses to education and did not believe there were such distinct subcultures
•getting in (from low achievers who wanted to join manual occupations)
•getting out (from high achievers who wanted to use eduction to improve their social class position)
•getting on (ordinary wc youths who comply with school rules)
Why do ethnic minority students form anti- school subcultures?
Lack of parental support Language barriers Rebellion against parents Peer groups To gain status To demonstrate masculinity Response to teacher racism Ethnocentric curriculum
Sewell (the 4 groups he noticed)
Conformists -want to achieve in education, motivated to succeed- pro school and pro education
Innovators - accepted goals of schooling but rejected the means of achieving the goals - pro education, anti school / teachers and schools failed to provide for their needs
Retreatists - boys rejected goals of schooling and education and means of achieving them - were not confrontational- just did not like the school work
Rebels - followed tap culture and felt school and education had failed then- disliked and distrusted by the other 3 groups
