Delinquent subcultures
Refers to ‘youth deviance’ which is behaviour associated with rule and norm breaking but not necessarily law breaking acts
E.g drinking
Drugs
Fighting
Relevant subcultures - Rastafarians, punks and ravers
Criminal subcultures
Refers to subcultures who are actively involved in law breaking behaviour and criminal activities
E.g drug dealing and organised theft/burglary
Cloward and Ohlin
-youth may join criminal subcultures if they are unable to achieve valued goals (e.g success, money and possessions) through their traditional roots - therefore they become innovative and obtain these goals through illegal behaviour and activities
- deprivation, poverty, boredom, alienation

Gangs
Concept used by media and police when discussing a group who may cause harm to the community and are involved in criminality (violence is a key characteristic)
-strong hierarchy/ sense of solidarity/ territorial attitudes/ sense of rules relating to membership

Anti school subcultures
Refers to youths who reject the norms and values and attitudes of schools and other educational institutions - less likely to achieve
