Purpose: tx of sevre inflm, adrenal insufficiency, ulcerative colitis, collagen disorder, asthma, lupus & COPD

SE: depression, flushing, sweating, hypertension, nausea, diarrhea, hyperglycemia, mood changes, euphoria, blurred vision, thrombocytopenia

Nurs con:

• meds mask signs of infection so check for elevated temp, WBC count
• PO: take with food or milk
• rectal: for colitis, retain med for 60 min, onset 3-5 days
• do not mix with other medicines

Methylprednisolone

anti-inflm, corticosteriods

Purpose: tx of severe inflm, shock, adrenal insufficency, collagen disorders, mngmt of acute spinal cord injury & multiple sclerosis

SE: GI hemorrhage, HTN & circulatory problems, poor wound healing, hyperglycemia, mood changes, thrombocytopenia, increased IOP, diarrhea, nausea, distention

Nurs con:

• PO: take with food or milk
• peak: 1-2 hours, duration 1.5 days
• IM: peak 4-8 days, duration 1-4 weeks
• eat foods high in protein, calcium, vitamin D & potassium
• contact provider if anorexia, difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness; symptoms may appear during periods of stress or trauma
• contact provider if black/tarry stools, slow wound healing, blurred vision, bruising/bleeding, weight gain, emotional changes
• monitor pt weight, blood sugars & potassium

purpose: tx of severe inflm, immunosuppression, neoplasms & asthma

SE: depression, HTN, circulatory problems, N, diarrhea, abd distention, increased IOP, GI hemorrhage, tendon rupture, poor wound healing, hyperglycemia

Nurs Con: -PO: take with food or milk

• PO: peak 1-2 hours, duration 3-36 hours
• eat foods high in protein, calcium, vitamin D & potassium
• contact provider if anorexia, difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness; symptoms may appear during periods of stress or trauma
• contact provider if black/tarry stools, slow wound healing, blurred vision, bruising/bleeding, weight gain, emotional changes
• monitor pt weight, blood sugars & potassium

Purpose: tx of severe inflammation, immunosuppression, neoplasms, multiple sclerosis, collagen disorders, dermatological disorders, pulmonary fibrosis & asthma

SE: GI hemorrhage, HTN, circulatory problems, depression, N, D, abd distention, hyperglycemia, mood changes, increased IOP

Nurs con:

• PO take with food or milk, antacids
• PO: peak: 1-2 hours, duration 24-36 hours
• eat foods high in protein, calcium, vitamin D & potassium
• contact provider if anorexia, difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness; symptoms may appear during periods of stress or trauma
• contact provider if black/tarry stools, slow wound healing, blurred vision, bruising/bleeding, weight gain, emotional changes
• excessive consumption of licorice can increase risk of hypokalemia

Meloxicam

purpose: tx of pain or inflammation caused by arthritis

SE: dizziness, GI upset, Nausea, vomiting, URI, flulike symptoms
