Anti Inflammatory Flashcards
RA
Condition when white blood cells view self tissue as non self. Initiates an autoimmune response.
Prostaglandins
Lipid compounds that have hormone like effects. Act locally on the tissues in which they are made. Rapidly metabolized.
Many different biological activities based on which receptor is activated- could be agonist or antagonist.
All NSAIDS work by
Inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins.
How are prostaglandins made starting with phospholipids?
Phospholipids converted to arachidonic acid by phospolipiase A2.
Then AA can be used for either the lipooxygenase pathway or cyclooxyrgenase pathway. This produces COX 1 and COX 2, which both release prostaglandins.
COX 1
Responsible for regulatory and protective prostaglandins.
COX 2
Prostaglandins caused elevated production in sites of chronic disease and inflammation. heat, swelling, redness, pain.
