Anti-hypertensive drugs Flashcards
What type of drug is Ramipril?
Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor
What are the indications of Ramipril?
- Hypertension
- A prophylaxis after myocardial infarction for patients with clinical evidence of heart failure.
- Prevention of Cardiovascular events in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or with diabetes mellitus and at least one additional risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
- Nephropathy
What is the mechanism of action of Ramipril?
Ramipril inhibits the angiotensin-converting enzyme and decrease production of angiotensin II and the breakdown of bradykinin.
The decrease in angiotensin II leads to relaxation of arteriole smooth muscles and a widening of the vessel.
This leads to decreased blood pressure.
What is the action of nitrates?
Nitrates helps to dilate the arteries in the heart and increase its blood flow, relieving angina symptoms such as chest pain. Nitrates also dilates the veins and this allows more blood to be held throughout the body, thus reducing the amount of blood flowing to the heart and decreasing its workload.
