Anti fungals Flashcards
What is MOA of Amphotericin B?
Binds to Ergosterol in funcal cell membrane to make channels. Ion leakage. Cell death.
How is Amp B given?
IV
Amp B side effects?
Nephrotoxicity
What is Nystatin? How is it taken?
A polyene, like Amp B. It is taken as a mouthwash (Thrush) or a suppository (vaginal candidiasis)
What is the MOA of Azoles?
Inhibit ergosterol synthesis by inhibiting enzymes.
What is the main side effect of Azoles?
Inhibits CYP 450. Hepatotoxicity.
What Azole has good CNS penetration?
Fluconazole.
How is itraconazole different from fluconazole?
Itraconazole is broader acting but has poor CNS penetration.
What is voriconazole?
Even broader than itraconazole, but very expensive.
Side effects of voriconazole?
Hallucinations.
What is voriconazole used for?
Aspergillosis.
What is MOA of echinocandins?
Inhibits glucan synthesis (a cell wall component).
What is main use of echinocandins?
Candidiasis
What is flucytosine and what does it treat?
Flucytosine is a chemotherapeutic agent. Treats cryptococcal meningitis with Amp. B
What are some topical anti-fungal creams?
Allylamines (terbinafine)
