What is the main reservoir for B henslae?
Cats-scratch or bite!
What is the presentation of cutaneous bartonella?
Non specific scratch/skin lesion
Painful lymphadenopathy
What is the best test for B Henslae?
Immunofluorescence blood test
What are the symptoms in acute phase of carrion disease?
Severe anaemia, pallor, fever, hepatomegaly, cardiac murmur and jaundice
What happens during the acute phase of carrion disease?
There is an acute decrease in immune system and so patients die from opportunistic infections
What are the cardiovascular complications?
Pericarditis, tamponade, heart failure, tachyarrhythmias
What are the neurological complications?
Seizures, coma
What do you see in the smears of bartonella?
Intra-erythrocytic gram negative coccobacilli, prolonged disease gett coccid forms in RBCs
Tx of chronic bartonella?
Azithromycin
