Anterior Trunk Muscles Flashcards
What are the muscles of the anterior trunk?
- Serratus Anterior
- Pectoralis major
- External oblique
- Internal oblique
- Transversus abdominis
- Rectus abdominis
What are the movements of the Serratus Anterior?
Forward arm rotation and pulls scapula forward
What are the attachments of the Serratus anterior?
- Origin: from surface of 1st to 8th ribs
- Insertion: along entire length of medial border of scapula
What are the movements of pectoralis major?
Humerus flexion and adduction and medial rotation
What are the attachments of pectoralis major?
- Origin: clavicular head (medial half of clavicle) and sternal head
- Inserts: lateral lip of intertubercular groove and deltoid tuberosity of humerus
What are the movements of external oblique?
Rotates trunk and pulls chest down
What are the attachments of external oblique?
- Origin: from ribs 5-12
- Insert: iliac crest and pubic tubercle
What are the movements of the internal oblique?
Rotates trunk and supports abdominal wall
What are the attachments of internal oblique?
- Origin: inguinal ligament and anterior iliac crest
- Inserts: into linea alba, ribs 10-12 and pectineal line
What are the movements of transversus abdominis?
Stabilises vertebral column, trunk movement and tension
What are the attachments of the transversus abdominis?
- Origin: pubic symphysis
- Inserts: xiphoid process of sternum, symphysis pubis and linea alba
What are the movements of the rectus abdominis?
Rib cage and pelvis tilt inward, toward rib cage
Also spine flexion
What are the attachments of rectus abdominis?
- Origin: pubic symphysis
- Inserts: xiphoid process of sternum (and costal cartilages of ribs 5-7)
