What is an antagonist?
A muscle that opposes a prime mover, by performing the opposite action
What is flexion?
Decreasing the angle between 2 bones
What is extension?
Increasing the angle between 2 bones
What is Abduction?
Moving an appendage in the frontal plane away from the midline
What is Adduction?
Moving an appendage in the horizontal plane toward the midline
What is Cirumduction?
Moving the distal end of an appendage in a circle, without rotation
What is a dorsiflexion?
Lifting the anterior part of the foot
What is a plantar flexion?
Lowering the anterior part of the foot
What is inversion?
Lifting the medial edge of the foot
What is eversion?
Lifting the outside edge of the foot
What is protraction?
To thrust forward, or move anteriorly
What is retraction?
To move posteriorly
What is upward rotation?
Rotating the inferior angle of the scapula laterally, so that the glenoid cavity is turned upward
What is downward rotation?
Rotating the inferior angle of the scapula medially so that the glenoid cavity is turned downward
What is medial rotation?
Rotating an appendage such that anterior structures face more medially
What is lateral rotation?
Rotating an appendage such that anterior structures face more laterally
