Antacids Flashcards
Aluminum hydroxide; calcium carbonate; magnesium trisilicate
Side effects: constipation, phosphate depletion.
monitor bowel pattern; is pt. sodium restricted?
aluminum and mag interferes with TETRACYCLINE ABSORPTION.
encourage fluids!
signs of phosphate depletion
malaise, weakness, tremors, bone pain
magnesium hydroxide
caution - excessive dose can produce nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
storage: room temp and tight lid!
dependence can occur/caution in RENAL disease.
aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide
slight laxative effect, encourage fluid intake, caution with renal disease
General considerations
neutralizes gastric acids, raises gastric pH, inactivates pepsin
may cause acid rebound between doses/metabolic acidosis.
Absorption of tetracyclines, quinolones, phenothiazides, iron preparations, isoniazid reduced if given with antacids.
Oral contraceptives and salicylates effectiveness- decreased
