Annelida Flashcards
1
Q
Metamerism
A
Being composed of serially repeating parts
2
Q
Metameres/somites
A
- Segments are called metameres or somites
- Metameres can be repetitive but not identical
3
Q
Setae/chaetae
A
Needle-like chitinous structures of the integument
4
Q
Parapodia
A
Paired paddle-like appendages used for locomotion
5
Q
Classes
A
- Polychaeta: Marine worms
- Oligochaeta: Earthworms
- Hirundinida: Leeches
6
Q
Clitella
A
- Oligochaeta + Hirundinida
- Characterised by reproductive organ called the clitellum
7
Q
Polychaeta:
* Organism:
* Locomation:
* Appendages:
* Clitellum:
A
- Organism: Marine worms
- Locomation: Parapodia
- Appendages: Bear setae/chaetae on each parapodia
- Clitellum: No
8
Q
Oligochaeta
* Organism:
* Environment:
* Appendages:
* Reproduction:
* Clitellum:
A
- Organism: Freshwater and earth worms
- Environment: Freshwater and terrestrial
- Appendages: Bear setae/chaetae but less than polychaeta
- Reproduction: Sexual reproduction, monoecious
- Clitellum: Yes
9
Q
Oligochaeta: Reproduction process
A
- Extend anterior ends from burrows & press ventral surfaces together
- Sperm discharged & travels along seminal groove into the seminal receptacle of the other worm
- Worms separate & secrete:
* a mucous tube
* a tough band that forms a cocoon aroud their clitellum - Cocoon mixes:
* eggs from the oviducts
* albumin from skin glands
* sperm from the mate stored in the seminal vesicles - Fertilisation of egg occurs in the cocoon
- Cocoon slides off the head
- Embryonic development occurs within the cocoon
10
Q
Hirundinida:
* Organism:
* Environment:
* Appendages:
* Reproduction:
* Nutrition:
* Clitellum:
A
- Organism: Leeches
- Appendages: No parapodia or setae/chaetae
- Reproduction: Sexual reproduction, monoecious, cross-fertilization
- Nutrition: Carnivore (invertebrates) or temporary parasites (vertebrates)
- Clitellum: Only visible during the breeding season
