Who does ankylosing spondylitis usually present in?
Young men - teens to mid thirties
How does ankylosing spondylitis present?
Bilateral buttock pain, chest wall and thoracic pain
What does examination show in ankylosing spondylitis?
Often normal
Later - loss of lumbar lordosis, exaggerated thoracic kyphosis, reduced chest expansion
What investigations are done in ankylosing spondylitis?
CRP can be raised, MRI spine and SI joints
What us the management for ankylosing spondylitis?
NSAIDs and physio, anti-TNFs, IL-17 inhibitors
Sulfasalazine when peripheral joint involvement
What is ankylosing spondylitis?
Part of the spondyloarthropathies, chronic progressive inflammatory arthropathy, associated with presence of HLA-B27 gene
