What is hallux valgus?
Deformity of the big toe caused by medial deviation of the 1st metatarsal, resulting in lateral deviation of the toe itself.
Is surgery useful in hallux valgus?
Yes in terms of symptom control, but not cosmetically beneficial.
What is hallux rigidus?
A condition affecting the base of the big toe, causing pain/stiffness.
What is Morton’s neuroma?
When plantar nerves results in inflammation and swelling. The result of repeated trauma.
Most commonly affects the third interspace.
What is the most common site of metatarsal stress fracture?
2nd metatarsal
Second is the 3rd metatarsal.
Are x-rays useful in metatarsal fractures?
No, it can take around 3 weeks to show an x-ray.
Most helpful imaging in these patients is a bone scan.
What is the medical term used to describe flat feet?
Pes planus
What is present in claw toes?
Hyperextension at the MTP joint, with hyperflexion at the PIP joints, and DIP joints.
What is present in hammer toes?
Hyperextension at the DIP joints.
