What is this a presentation of?
Elderly female with lateral deviation of great toe at MTP joint, medial deviation of 1st metatarsal, typically bilateral, secondary OA in joint.
Hallux valgus (bunions)
What is the treatment for hallux valgus (bunions)?
Wider shoes, foot exercises, surgical osteotomy for painful bunions which inhibit lifestyle.
What is this a presentation of?
Obese and inactive 30-50 year old individual with gradual onset heel pain, worse in the morning or after rest.
Plantar fasciitis
What is the cause of plantar fasciitis?
Arises from degenerative changes from micro-trauma.
What is the treatment for plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fascia stretching exercises, NSAIDs, surgical plantar fascia release if refractory.
What is this a presentation of?
Gradual onset posterior ankle pain and stiffness, made worse by exercise. Swelling, tenderness, and crepitus of tendon.
Achilles tendonitis
How is suspected Achilles tendonitis investigated?
Can do US or X-ray (soft tissue swelling, calcifications)
What is the treatment for Achilles tendonitis?
Calf muscle physio, NSAIDs, orthotics
What is this a presentation of?
Woman with painful 3rd webspace in foot. Dull ache, sharp burning pain in ball of foot, paraesthesia.
Morton’s neuroma
What is Morton’s neuroma and what does it cause?
- Benign fibrotic thickening of nerve tissue.
2. Compression of common digital nerve between metatarsal heads.
How is suspected Morton’s neuroma investigated?
MRI or US
What is the treatment for Morton’s neuroma?
Excision if troublesome
