Ankle Flashcards
Anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)
Lateral malleolus forwards to anterior side of talus
Where is the Posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL)
Lateral malleolus backwards to posterior side of talus
Where is the Calcaneofibular ligament (CFL)
Lateral malleolus to lateral surface of calcaneus
What is the ankle syndesmosis?
Ligaments that stabilise the fibula and the tibia at the ankle joint - injured in high ankle sprain
What ligaments make up the ankle syndesmosis?
Anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, Posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, Interosseous ligament
What makes up the lateral collateral ligament/ lateral ligament complex?
Anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), Posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL), Calcaneofibular ligament (CFL)
Where is anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament?
Lateral malleolus forwards to lateral side of bottom of tibia
Posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament
Lateral malleolus backwards to lateral side of bottom of tibia
Medial collateral/ deltoid ligament
Fan shaped sheet of ligament from medial malleolus broadening downwards
Test to stress posterior talofibular ligament (PLFT) calcaneofibular ligament (CFL)?
Patient supine. Stabilise shin. Use other hand to dorsiflex and invert - try and stretch PLFT (pulling calcaneus a bit towards you and away from lateral malleolus
Test to stress anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)?
Patient supine. Hold round top of foot, plantar flex and invert - and try to stretch where ligament lies (from lateral malleolus forwards to anterior surface of talus)
