Almost all masculine and neutral nouns receive the ending -s or -es in the genitive:
● Die meisten mehrsilbigen Nomen erhalten ein -s:
- der Künstler → des Künstlers
- der Maler → des Malers
- das Kunstwerk → des Kunstwerks
● NomenmitderEndung-s,-ß,-xoder-zerhalten ein -es:
- das Glas → des Glases
- der Fuß → des Fußes
- der Komplex → des Komplexes
- der Witz → des Witzes
Auch: der Arzt → des Arztes
● Viele einsilbige Nomen können ein -es oder -s erhalten:
- das Bild → des Bildes / Bilds
- das Kind → des Kindes / des Kinds
- der Mann → des Mannes /Manns
● Endet das Nomen auf -sch oder -st überwiegt die Endung -es, da sie leichter auszusprechen ist. Die Endung -s ist aber auch möglich:
- der Wunsch → des Wunsch(e)s
- das Fest → des Fest(e)s

● Nounswiththeending-s,-ß,-x or-zgetan-es:

- the complex → of the complex
- the joke → of the joke
Also: the doctor → of the doctor
● Many monosyllabic nouns can get an -es or -s:
- the painting→ of the painting
- the child → of the child
- theman→oftheman

● If the noun ends on -sch or -st, the ending -es prevails because it is easier to pronounce. But the ending -s is also possible:

• the wish → of the wish
• the celebration → of the celebration

Genitive for personal names
Wenn man den Besitz von einer Person angibt und den Namen der Person nennt, dann steht der Name an erster Stelle und bekommt ein Genitiv “-s”:
● Das sind Katies Bilder.
● Herr Krauts Enkelin heißt Lola.
Endet der Name mit -s, -z oder -x kommt kein -s. In der Schriftsprache wird ein Apostroph ‘ angehängt:
● Jonas’ Freunde

If one indicates possession of a person and mentions the person’s name then the name comes first and gets a genitive “-s”:

● Mr. Kraut’s granddaughter is called Lola.
If the name ends with -s, -z or -x there is no -s. In the written language an apostrophe ‘ is appended:
