Animal Responses Flashcards
What is the mammalian nervous system made of
Peripheral and central nervous system
What does the peripheral NS include
Receptors and sensory and motor neurones
What does the CNS include
Coordination centre- has brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous system is split into what
Somatic - consciously controlled- it is voluntary e.g wanting to stand up
Autonomic- automatic- unconscious
What does the cerebrum do
Biggest part of brain
Splits into 2 hemispheres
Controls conscious thoughts, personality and high level brain functions
What does the cerebellum do
Coordinates Muscle movement
What does the medulla oblongata do
Above spinal cord
Centre of control for unconscious activities such as breathing or heart rate
What does the hypothalamus do
Responsible for homeostasis
Such as water balance
And temperature
Pituitary gland function
Master gland as secretes hormones to coordinate many responses
What is the anterior and posterior pituitary gland and what does it do
Anterior - front - produces own hormones and secretes them for different processes
Posterior - back- secretes hormones produced from hypothalamus
What is the autonomic nervous system split into
Sympathetic- stimulates activity- increases activity
E.g flight or fight - releases acetylcholine
Parasympathetic- causes less activity to organ- releases noradrenaline
What happens when the fight/flight is activated
-increased heart rate
-increased sweating
-pupils dilate
-hairs stand up
What nervous system is activated
Sympathetic
What are advantages of flight or fight
-respond to danger
-increased awareness
What is the mechanism of adrenaline action
-adrenaline released from, adrenal medulla binds to the receptor
-this activates a G protein which stimulates activation of adenyl cyclase
-this converts ATP to cAMP
-cAMP causes effect inside the cell by activating enzyme action
