Animal Responses Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function of the cerebrum?
A
Processes sensory input, and so is crucial for processes like vision and hearing, and is involved in learning, memory and higher level thinking
2
Q
What is the function of the cerebellum?
A
- Controls unconscious functions like posture, balance and involuntary muscular movement
- Recieves information about balance and the tones of muscles and tone of muscles and tendons, and relays this information to areas of the cerebral cortex involved with motor control
3
Q
What are the 3 main functions of the hypothalamus?
A
- Homeostasis
- Water balance
- Hormonal regulation
4
Q
Which muscles appear striated and why?
A
- Skeletal and cardiac
- Due to the arrangement of contractile fibres
5
Q
What is the structure of skeletal muscles?
A
- Long, tubular and multinucleated
- They have contractile fibres organised in parallel bundles called myofibrils
6
Q
What is the structure of cardiac muscle fibres?
A
- Branched rather than long and tubular, and cells are uninucleated
- They have contractile fibres organised in myofibrils
7
Q
What is the use of creatine phosphate in muscle contraction?
A
- Acts as a reserve supply of phosphate
- Immediately available to combine with ADP and form ATP
- Used for short, vigorous exercise
