Animal Nutrition Flashcards
What are the four main feeding mechanisms?
Suspension feeders
Substrate feeders
Fluid feeders
Bulk feeders
How is ATP produced?
Carbohydrates, proteins and fat molecules are produced
What are suspension feeders?
An animal that feeds on particles of organic matter suspended in water
What is an example of a suspension feeder?
A baleen whale, filter feeding
What is a substrate feeder?
An animal that moved through and ingests the substrate that they live within
What is a fluid feeder?
Organisms that feed on the fluid of other organisms e.g. mosquito
What is an example of a substrate feeder?
A catepillar, living and ingesting leaves
What is a bulk feeder?
Animals that eat large pieces of food, with the pray sometimes being larger than the predator e.g. snake
What are examples of homeostasis?
Glucose regulation and weight regulation
Where is excess glucose stored?
In the liver and muscles, as glycogen
What hormones play the following roles to regulate glucose?
a) When there is too LITTLE glucose in the blood
b) When there is too MUCH glucose in the blood
a) Glucagon
b) Insulin
What organ are glucagon and insulin secreted by?
The pancreas
When leptin doesn’t function, what develops?
Obesity
What are the two categories of vitamins?
Water soluble and fat soluble
What is the aim of food ingestion?
To make large molecules into smaller molecules, so they can get through the epithelial lining
