Animal Kingdom Flashcards
Vertebrates
has backbone
Invertebrates
no backbone
Consumer
organism that eats other organisms
Ganglion
a mass of nerve cells
Gut
the digestive tract
Coelom
body cavity that contains internal organs
Bilateral Symmetry
two sides of the body mirror each other, it has equal right and left sides, complex.
Radial Symmetry
body is organized around the center.
Asymmetry
not organized; simple
Sponges
They are multicellular organisms that have bodies full of pores and channels allowing water to circulate through them
Cnidarians
an aquatic invertebrate animal of the phylum Cnidaria, which comprises the coelenterates.
Flatworms
are found in marine, freshwater, and even damp terrestrial environments. Most are free-living forms, but many are parasitic on other animals.
Roundworms
They are a diverse animal phylum inhabiting a broad range of environments.
Mollusks
an invertebrate of a large phylum which includes snails, slugs, mussels, and octopuses. They have a soft unsegmented body and live in aquatic or damp habitats, and most kinds have an external calcareous shell.
Open circulatory system
pump blood into a hemocoel with the blood diffusing back to the circulatory system between cells.
Closed circulatory system
have the blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness.
Annelid worms
are a large phylum, with over 22,000 extant species including ragworms, earthworms, and leeches.
Exoskeleton
a rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals, especially arthropods, providing both support and protection.
Compound eye
an eye consisting of an array of numerous small visual units, as found in insects and crustaceans.
Antenna
either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods.
Metamorphosis
the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Endoskeleton
an internal skeleton, such as the bony or cartilaginous skeleton of vertebrates.
Water vascular system
a network of water vessels in the body, the tube feet being operated by hydraulic pressure within the vessels.
