Animal Behavior and Physiology Flashcards
Von Frisch
Studied honeybee communication
Lorenz
Worked with imprinting
Geese followed him around
Tinbergen
Fixed action pattern
Fixed action pattern
Innate, highly stereotypical behavior that once begun cannot stop
Ex: Fish has to attack when it sees red, no matter what
Sign stimuli
Associated with FAP
External stimuli
Learning
sophisticated process in which the responses of the organism are modified as a result of the experience
Habituation
Animal comes to ignore persistent stimulus so it can go about its buisness
Classical Conditioning
Learn to simply associate one thing with another
Ex: trained dogs hear a bell and know food is coming
Operant Conditioning
Trial and error learning
Use reward and punishment to have animal repeat or avoid behavior
Ex: give dog treat to sit and then he will sit down again
Imprinting
Occurs in a critical part of the early life
Ex: ducklings imprint on their mothers and follow them around
Agonistic behavior
Aggressive behavior within species
settles disputes between individuals
Altruism
Reduces an individual’s reproductive fitness, but benefits the species as a whole
Basically take one for the team
Kin Selection
The kin actually sacrifices itself for the family
