Angiogenesis Flashcards
What are angiogenesis?
the formation of new blood vessels
What do angiogesis do to help what kind of cancer cells?
Tumors are limited in growth to around 1-2mm due to the limited diffusion of oxygen/nutrients and removal of waste, so cells are basically choking with no oxygen
thus cancer cells look for angiogenicm a way to induce blood vessels
what is the angiogenic switch and what happens?
cancer initiate an aniogenic switch
they increase release of pro-angiogenic molecules (VEGF) and decrease the release of anti-angiogenic molecules (thrombospondin)
What does angiogenesis result to?
resulting in new blood vessel growth
growth of cancer
invasion into the bloodstream
metastasis
What is metastasis?
the development of secondary malignant growths at a distance from a primary site of cancer
they are taken over
what is the percentage of patients with invasive cancer that also have metastases at diagnosis?
70%
Fill in the blank:
Metastasis leads to ___ of cancer-realted deaths
95%
What is metastatic cascade?
the process whereby aggressive cancer cells leave the primary tumor, travel through the bloodstream, and eventually reach distant organs to develop one or several metastases
