Q

one STRENGTH of anger management CBT is that it is EFFECTIVE in causing offenders to change their cog processes and REDUCE reoffening.

A

Anger management gets the CAUSE of offending e.e.g COG processes which TRIGGER anger and lead to offending whereas other methods like BEHAVIOUR modification only deal with SURFACE behaviour.

Therefore anger management gives offenders INSIGHT into the CAUSE of their criminality and leads them to DISCOVER ways of MANAGING themselves.

However BLACKBURN disagreed and said it has an effect in the ST but not in the LT of reducing recidivism. This may be because in the APP phase it uses ROLE PLAY which may NOT relate well to REAL life to be effective and so it has LOW ecological validity.

Therefore anger management may NOT reduce re-offending.

Q

one ISSUE with anger management CBT as a way of dealing with dealing with offending behaviour is that it has LOW impact.

A

HOWELLS looked at Australian offenders, anger management group and control group with no treatment.

Anger management group had LITTLE overall impact however this wasn’t true for ALL offenders in anger management programme.

significant progress was made with offenders who had INTENSE anger levels and those who were OPEN to change and MOTIVATED from the beginning.

Q

one ISSUE with anger management CBT is that it is EXPENSIVE and doesn’t always have a high SUCCESS rate

A

Programmes are EXPENSIVE to run as require HIGH trained specialists to deal with violent offenders so prisons may NOT have resources to FUND it and if they spend money on this it may have NEG implications for the ECONOMY.

Success is also based on COMMITMENT of the prisoners so it will be a problem if they do NOT cooperate.

Therefore an issue is that the process could take LONGER in these circumstances and lead to further EXPENSE.
