Anesthesia Lecture 5 Flashcards
When surgery is complete, what should be done?
Turn off the iso, disconnect the patient, flush the system, reconnect and allow them to breath 100% oxygen for 1-3 mins, then disconnect the patient and turn off the machine
Pulling the ET tube
Dogs= When the dog swallows multiple times; Brachycephalic= Wait until the dog can hold head up and is sternal; Cats= When voluntary movement begins or swallow reflexes
Total rebreathing system
Pop-off is closed; Has increased pressure in circuit; do not respond quickly to vaporizer changes
Cons of closed/semi-closed systems
Requires more skill and monitoring, risky anesthesia, increased CO2, increased pressure, slow to change in % of inhalant
True or false: open systems have a small amount of re-circulated air in the system
True
A bain system should only be used with…
Patients less than 7 kg
Inhalants in order of most potent to least potent
Methoxy, Halothane, Isoflurane, and Sevoflurane
Precision vaporizers work correctly when…
Place outside the circle
MAC
Minimum alveolar concentration; the lowest concentration at which there is no response to pain in 50% of patients
MAC for Isofluane
1.5 x 1.2= 1.8%
Con of Halothane
Associated with malignant hyperthermia
Characteristics of Isoflurane
Uses a precision vaporizer, high margin of safety, MAC= 1.2, very low solubility coefficient, low fat solubility, good choice for patients with issues
1 pro of Isoflurane
99% is eliminated by the lungs
Pro of Sevoflurane
Primarily eliminated from the body by respirations
