Anemias Flashcards
Microcytic
Iron deficiency, ACD, thalassemias, lead poisoning, sideroblastic
Normocytic/Nonhemolytic
ACD, aplastic anemia, chronic kidney disease
Normocytic/Hemolytic/Intrinsic
hereditary spherocytosis, G6PD def., PK def., HbC, sickle cell, PNH
Normocytic/Hemolytic/Extrinsic
autoimmune, microangiopathic, macroangiopathic, infections
Macrocytic/Megaloblastic
folate def., B-12 def., orotic aciduria
Macrocytic/Nonmegaloblastic
liver disease, alcoholism, reticulocytosis
Iron deficiency
due to chronic bleeding, malnutrition, increased demand.
decreased iron, ferritin; increased TIBC
alpha-thalassemia
mutation in alpha-globin gene.
4 gene deletion = no alpha-globin, all gamma-globin, Hb Barts (g4, hydrops fetalis - no life)
3 gene deletion = HbH disease, excess beta-globin (b4)
1-2 gene deletion = not significant
cis deletion = Asian
trans deletion = African
