What are the 3 microcytic anemias?
iron deficiency, thalessemia, lead poisoning
What is most indicative of iron deficiency anemia?
low ferritin
What labs indicate iron deficiency anemia?
low H&H, Low MVC and MCH, low ferritin, Increased TIBC
Thalessemia is most common in what cultural backgrounds?
Asian and Middle Eastern
What lab is indicative of thalessemia?
normal ferritin
What conditions may present with normocytic/normochromic anemia?
CKD, dialysis, acute blood loss (seen with anemia of chronic disease)
What is the reason for normocytic, normochromic anemia?
bone marrow is slowed down
What conditions commonly present with macrocytic anemia?
alcoholism; Vit B12 or folate deficiency
What labs would indicate Macrocytic anemia?
low H&H, High MCV and in addition draw Vit B and folate levels to determine other causes of macrocytic anemia
