2
Q
attention
A
- Attention refers to ‘concentration of mental effort on sensory or mental events’ (Solso, 1995)
- Due to limited cognitive capacity, attention is often selective - filterning out or ignore some input, focus on certain stimul
3
Q
memory
A
Encoding, storage and retrieval of information, potentially leading to long-term retention.
- Information we do not focus on but can recall is caùlled incidental memory - unintentionally rememberd.
4
Q
concentration and doodling
A
- A doodle is a drawing, sketch or pattern created to pass the time, rather for any other purpose.
- Despite what some might think (doodlers lost interest and do not pay attention), Andrade suggests that doodling can help us concentrate better on tasks that are not very interesting.
- This happens as doodling helps reduce daydreaming that results from boredom (daydreaming - focusing on our own thoughts rather than events happening around us)
- It is commonly understood that dividing our cognitive capacity among different tasks may lead to decreased task performance, yet because tasks such as doodling and listening require different cognitive capacities or ways of thinking, doodling may enhance concentration by increasing arousal levels, inhibiting daydreaming and supporting our arrousal and focus on the external stimulus.
