What is a domus?
A rich Romans house
What was the peristylium?
A walled garden that usually contained flowers and the family’s favourite gods
What were insulaes?
A poor Romans house. The equivalent to an apartment
Name some of the terrible conditions in an insulae?
- no running water
- sewage dumped onto the streets
- couldnt cook
What was the via sacra?
A pathway that ran down the middle of the market. This is where the soldiers would run through after a victory
How did the Romans eat?
They ate with there fingers and lay on sofas
What type of food did they eat?
They are live parrot, camel toes and peacock etc.
What types of slaves are there?
- slaves that worked on land
- galley slaves worked on boats
- teachers and doctors
- household slave
- trained to be a gladiator
How could a slave receive its freedom?
In a ceremony called a manumission. They were touched with a stick called a vindicta

This was the school Rich Roman children went to when they were 7
What did they learn at the Lundas?
They learnt basic writing and arithmetic
What was the grammaticus?
The school boys attended when they were 12
What did they learn at grammaticus?
They learnt Greek, history, grammar, geometry and more arithmetic
What does oration mean?
Making speeches in public. Boys in the grammaticus were taught how to public speak
What did girls do after the Lundas?
They stayed at home with there mums and learnt domestic duties
What was the caldarium?
This was the hottest room in the Roman baths.
What was the tempidarium?
This was the warm room in the Roman baths
What was the frigidarium?
The coldest room in the baths

Where were gladiator fights held?
Mainly the colosseum but sometimes in other arenas
Who were gladiators?
Slaves, prisoners of war or paid professionals
