Ancef Flashcards
Cefazdin/Ancef: mechanism of action and indications
pregnancy
Classification: 1st generation cephalosporins
MOA: inhibitors of cell wall synthesis
indications: First-generation cephalosporins have coverage against most gram-positive cocci as well as some gram-negative bacteria, e.g., Escherichia coli (E. coli), Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Used with gram + infection; surgical prophylaxis, and with MILD PCN allergy
pregnancy classification: unsure–no data but does cross the placental barrier
Cefazdin/Ancef:
FDI, labs, nursing assessment, method of administration, education
fdi: High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Moderate Potential Hazard, High plausibility
Parenteral cefazolin sodium contains approximately 46 mg (2 mEq) of sodium per each gram of cefazolin activity. The sodium content should be considered in patients with conditions that may require sodium restriction, such as congestive heart failure, hypertension, and fluid retention.
lab tests: nursing assessment (pre admin): assess for penicillin allergy
nursing assessment (post admin): asses for allergy and severe side effects (including HTN) dc and find another med if side effects shown
method of administration: IM or IV
patient and family education: complete whole course, do not miss a dose
