Anatomy Skin Flashcards
Nerve Ending
Sensory nerve ending in the skin can elicit all of the principal sensations: touch, pain, itch, warmth and cold.
Sebaceous Gland
Microscopic glans found in your hair follicles that secrete sebum.
Sebum is an oily substance that protects your skin from drying out.
These glands can clog.
Sweat Gland
Are coiled tubular structures vital for regulating human body temperature.
Three different types: eccrine, apocrine, and apoeccrine.
Hair follicles
Structures within your skin that grow hair.
Damaged hair follicles lead to hair loss and reduced hair growth.
Hair Root
In the skin and extends down to the deeper layers of the skin.
Surrounded by the hair follicle which is also connected to a sebaceous gland.
Blood Vessels
Supplies cells and tissue with nutrients and oxygen, regulates the blood pressure, regulates the body temperature and provides a barrier against absorption.
Subcutaneous Tissue
Deepest layer of the skin.
Made up of mostly fat cells and connective tissue and most of the body fat is stored here.
Dermis
A connective tissue layer between the epidermis and subcutaneous tissue.
Fibrous structure composed of collagen, elastic tissue and other extracellular components ie. nerve ending, hair follicles and glands. .
Epidermis
Most superficial layer of the skin and provides the first barrier of the protection from the invasion of substances into the body.
Divided into five layers or stratas.
Skin
Body’s largest organ, made up of water, protein, fats, and minerals.
Protects your body from germs and regulates body temperature.
Nerves in the skin help you feel sensations like hot and cold.
