A protection from trauma to the outer half of the distal digit, as a pressure plate to amplify fine touch perception in underlying structures and as an extension of the distal digit.

A
Visible portion of the distal nail matric that extends beyond the proximal nailfold.
It is white, half moon shaped appears by week 14 of gestation, has unique histologic features.
Defining the free edge of the distal nail plate.

Plays an important role in hail health.
Provides protection for the tissue that grows new cells to build nails.
