Anatomy: PNS Flashcards
What is the posterior ramus(Dorsal branch)?
Posterior division of spinal nerve
What is the anterior ramus(Ventral branch)?
Anterior division of spinal nerve
What are the plexus?
Are branching network of nerves/vessels
What are ganglion?
Nerve cell clusters/group of nerve bodies in the autonomic nervous system/sensory system
What are afferent?
Are input nerve fibres
What are efferents?
Output nerve fibres
What is the dura?
The dura is the thick outer meningeal layer attached to the skull
What is the arachnoid?
It’s a layer containing arachnoid space/blood brain barrier for exchange between blood and CSF
What is the pia?
Pia is the protective layer directly over the brain and continues down the spinal cord
What are the white ramus communicans?
Are preganglionic sympathetic nerve tract fibres from the spinal cord
What are the grey ramus communicans?
Are postganglionic nerve fibres for sympathetic tract
Where does the brachial plexus arise from?
Arises from C5-T1 sensory and motor fibres
How many peripheral nerves does the brachial plexus give rise to?
Gives rise to the 5 major peripheral nerves
Structure of the brachial plexus?
- 5 roots
- 3 trunk
- 2 division
- 3 cords
- Terminal branches

Where does the lumbosacral plexus arise from?
Arises from L1-S3
- lubar plexus(L1-L4)
- Lumbosacral trunk(L4/L5)
- Sacral plexus(S1-S3)
What is the largest nerve in the body?
Sciatic nerve
What does the sciatic nerve bifurcate to become?
Bifurcates to become the tibial and common fibular nerves
What are the major branches of the lumbosacral plexus?
- Femoral(Quadriceps)
- Obturator(adductor muscles)
- Tibial(Hamstrings, calf muscles)
- Commo fibular/peroneal(Anterior leg)

What does the somatic nervous system supply?
Motor supply to somatic/skeletal musculature
-Voluntary
What does the ANS supply?
ANS supply visceral smooth muscle and glands
-Involuntary
