Anatomy/physiology of ear Flashcards
What type of epithelium does the external ear have?
Stratified keratinised squamous epithelium
What causes cauliflower ear?
Pinna haematoma, collection of blood causes cartilaginous areas to becomes avascular leading to loss of cartilaginous structure, haematoma should be drained.
Infection of outer ear canal
Otitis externa
What is the medical term for ear drum
Tympanic membrane
What are the three ossicles called?
Malleus, incus, stapes
Which nerve is closely associated to the middle ear cavity and why is this knowledge important?
Facial nerve, care must be taken during surgery to this area or can cause facial nerve palsy
What is the function of the ossicles
To transmit sound from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear, much more important role than tympanic membrane
Infection of the middle ear
Otitis media
middle ear infection with effusion due to blockage of the Eustachian tube
Glue ear “disease of childhood”
Treatment given to treat glue ear/otitis media in children to help ventilate the middle ear
Grommet
Keratinized squamous epithelium in middle ear(where it is meant to be respiratory epithelium), causes problems, grows and are destructive
Cholesteatoma(nothing to do with cholesterol)
Converts sound pressure patterns from the outer ear into electrochemical impulses
Cochlea
Responsible for some of the sensory input to aid in balance
Vestibular system
