Anatomy of the Tooth Flashcards
Enamel:
hard outer layer of the crown of the tooth.
Dentin:
forms main portion of the body of the crown and root.
Root:
portion of tooth covered by cementum.
Cementum:
bone-like substance covering the root that anchors the tooth to the bone.
Cementoenamel Junction (CEJ):
where the crown and root of the tooth are joined.
Pulp:
found in the center of the tooth with the dentin surrounding it.
Sulcus:
space between tooth and gum tissue.
Gingiva:
gums; tissue that covers the alveolar mucosa.
Clinical versus anatomical crown.
- Clinical crown: part of tooth seen above the gum.
- Anatomical Crown: The entire crown of the tooth that is covered by enamel whether it is erupted or not.
What is the functional unit of tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth called?
Periodontium
Alveolar process (alveolar bones):
bony extensions of the maxilla and mandible that contain the tooth sockets of the teeth.
Alveolus
tooth socket.
Periodontal Ligament (PDL):
the teeth are attached to the bony surface of the alveoli by the fibrous ligament.
Periodontium:
the functional unit of tissues that surrounds and supports teeth.
