Anatomy of the male reproductive system Flashcards
The male reproductive system mainly resides within the pelvis (scrotum outside of the pelvis- cooler (2-4 degrees lower). It can be split into seven parts :
- the penis
- the testes and epididymis
- scortum
- spermatic cord
- prostate gland
- bulbourethral glands
- seminal vesicles
- Bulbourethral glands produces
lubricant
- Seminal vesicles-
more fluids for effective movement of sperm through the reproductive tracts
gross anatomy of the male reproductive system
label the male gross anatomy A-I
A- the prostate
B- suspensory ligament of the penis
C- corpus cavernosum
D- corpus spongiosum (less blood flow to stop the urethra from closing)
E- epididymis
F- spongy urethra
G- membranous urethra
H- ejaculatory duct
I- seminal vesicle
When catheterising
*always retract the the foreskin and clean the glands when catheterising, then bring the foreskin back over to stop the glands from swelling)
cadaver prosection labelled
A- Corpus cavernosum
B- Corpus spongiosum
C- Glans penis/ urethra
D- pubic symphysis
E- prostate
F- seminal vesicle
G- Vas deferens
dartos muscle of the scortum
muscle is a sheet of smooth muscle, situated immediately underneath the skin.
Acts to regulate temp- wrinkles the skin decreasing the surface area
cremator muscles of the scrotum
Cremator moves testis up and down for temp reg.
arterial supply of the scrotum
recieveres arterial supply from the anteiror and posterior scrotal arteries
anterior scrotal artery
arises from the external pudendal artery
posterior scrotal artery
derived from the internal pudendal artery
scrotal veins
follow the major arteries , draining intot he external pudendal veins
clincical applicattion
a 32 year old man presents at A&E with scrotal swelling after falling onto the cross bar of his bicycle when preparing to cycle home- extensive swelling and discolouration of the scrotum
D- damage to the external scrotal surface
