Anatomy of the Brain Flashcards
What do afferent neurons do?
Transmit information to the CNS from sensory receptors
Where are afferent neuronal cell bodies generally located?
In ganglia outside the CNS
What do efferent neurons do?
Transmit information from the CNS to effector cells
Where are efferent neuronal cell bodies generally located?
Within the CNS
What do interneurons do?
Found with in the CNS
Connect different regions of the brain and spinal cord
Receive, integrate and disseminate information
Account for ~90% of all CNS neurons
What is the function of the CNS?
To organise and analyse information
What is the function of the PNS?
To gather sensory information from the environment and relay it to the CNS
How many nerves are in the brain?
More than 100 billion
To what does the brain devote most of its volume?
Processing sensory inputs and initiating an appropriate motor response
What are the effectors of the nervous system?
Skeletal muscles, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, glands
Name the 6 regions of the brain and know where they are.
Cerebrum Cerebellum Diencephalon Mesencephalon Pons Medulla oblongata
Describe the structure of the cerebrum
4 lobes - frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital
Left and right hemispheres
Surface grey matter
What does the frontal lobe do?
Reasoning, planning, speech, movement, emotions, problem solving
What does the parietal lobe do?
Movement, orientation, recognition, perception of stimuli
What does the occipital lobe do?
Visual processing
What does the temporal lobe do?
Perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, memory, speech
What does the cerebellum do?
Contains half of all brain neurons
Physical movement and coordination
What is dysmetia?
The inability to coordinate motor activities, due to a cerebellum disorder
What are the components of the diencephalon?
Thalamus
Subthalamus
Hypothalamus
Epithalamus
What does the epithalamus do?
Secretes melatonin
Reward processing
What does the subthalamus do?
Modulates movement
Emotions
What does the thalamus do?
Relays sensory information to the cortex
What does the hypothalamus do?
Maintains homeostasis
Hormone control
What are the parts of the brainstem?
Pons
Midbrain
Medulla
