Anatomy of neurodegeneration Flashcards
Characteristics of neuro-degenerative disease
Affect specific parts of CNS
Begin insidiously and progress gradually
Pathophys of Alzheimer’s
Tau tangles and B-amyloid plaques
Sx Huntington’s
Muscle changes due to decreased ATP production
Osteoporosis
Decreased testosterone and insulin
Depression and psychosis
Pathophys Huntington’s
Lack of dopamine in caudate nucleus
Parkinsonian triad
Tremor, rigidity, postural instability
Pathiphys Parkinson’s
Substantia nigra in basal ganglia - decreased dopamine
Sx cerebellar injury
D = dysdiadochokinesia A = ataxia N = nystagmus I = intention tremor S = slurred speech H = hypotonia
multiple systems atrophy
Shy-drager syndrome
Autonomic failure and cerebellar degeneration
Hot cross bun sign on cerebellar MRI
Tx Multiple systems atrophy
L-dopa or anticholinergics
Progressive supranuclear palsy
Degeneration of brainstem
Supra-nuclear gaze palsy - can’t look up
Pseudobulbar palsy - pt suddenly very jovial/emotional
Hereditary spastic paraparesis
Scissoring gait / spastic gait
presents in childhood/early adulthood
Thin corpus callous
