Anatomy of a Long Bone Flashcards
Diaphysis
Long, cylindrical portion (shaft) of bone
Epiphysis
Proximal and distal ends of a bone. Includes articular surfaces.
Metaphysis
Junction between epiphysis and diaphysis. Includes the growth plate.
Articular Cartilage
Hyalin cartilage covers articular surfaces (between bones) to lessen friction
Periosteum
Outer membrane of bone. Surrounds bone where there is no cartilage. Periosteum contains bone cells, allowing bone to grow in width. Protects, nourishes, repairs, attachment site.
Medullary Canal or Cavity
Space within diaphysis where bone marrow is located.
Endosteum
Thin membrane that lines the medullary canal. Composed of a single layer of bone forming cells and a small amount of connective tissue.
