Anatomy - Nerve Damage Flashcards
Anterior hip dislocation, pelvic surgery
Obturator nerve - sensation in medial thigh and thigh adduction
Obturator nerve fxns
sensation in medial thigh and thigh adduction
Pelvic fracture, hematoma, abscess involving iliopsoas
Femoral nerve
Femoral nerve function
Sensation in the anterior thigh & knee and medial leg;
Thigh flexion, leg extension, patellar reflex
Fibular neck fracture or nerve compression at fibular neck
Common peroneal (fibular) nerve
Common peroneal function
Sensation in lateral leg and foot dorsum;
Foot eversion, dorsiflexion, toe extension (foot drop)
Knee trauma
Tibial nerve
Tibial nerve function
Sensation in sole of foot;
foot inversion, plantar flexion, toe flexion
(need tibial to stand on tiptoes!)
Posterior hip dislocation or buttocks injection
Superior gluteal nerve or inferior gluteal nerve
Superior gluteal nerve function
No sensory function.
Thigh abduction.
Inferior gluteal nerve function
No sensory function.
Thigh extension
Fractured surgical neck or anterior dislocation of humerus
Axillary
Axillary function
Sensation in lateral arm.
Arm abduction > 15 degrees
Upper trunk compression
Musculocutaneous
Musculocutaneous function
Sensation in lateral forearm.
Forearm flexion and supination.
Midshaft fracture of humerus, compression of axilla (crutches)
Radial
Radial function
Sensation in posterior arm & forearm and dorsal hand.
Elbow, wrist, finger extension. Grip strength.
(Wrist drop)
Supracondylar fracture of humerus, carpal tunnel, wrist lesion
Median nerve
Median nerve function
Sensation in thenar eminence, dorsal and palmar aspects of lateral 3 ½ fingers (proximal lesion);
Wrist and lateral finger flexion, thumb opposition, lumbricals of 2nd and 3rd digits (ape hand, Pope’s blessing)
Fracture of medial epicondyle of humerus; fractured hook of hamate
Ulnar nerve
Ulnar nerve sensory and motor deficit
Sensation in medial 1 ½ fingers including hypothenar eminence;
Radial deviation of wrist upon flexion (prox), wrist and medial finger flexion, abduction and adduction of fingers, medial 2 lumbricals
Superficial laceration of palm
Recurrent branch of median nerve
Recurrent branch of median nerve sensory and motor deficit
No sensory defection.
Opposition, abduction, and flexion of thumb (thenars, “ape hand”).
