Anatomy II- autonomics Flashcards
Sympathetic innervation
Originate in upper thoracic spinal cord
Synapse in the superior cervical ganglion
Parasympathetic nerves
Preganglionic: 3, 7, 9, 10
Synapse in ganglion:
-otic, submandibular, pterygoid, or ciliary
Postganglionic: usually synapses on the same or different cranial nerve
Parotid gland parasympathetic innervation
Preganglionic: lesser petrosal (CN 9)
Synapse: otic ganglion
Postganglionic: auriculotemporal (CN V3)
(Increase secretions)
Parotid gland sympathetic innervation
Travel with the external carotid artery
Vasoconstrict
Submandibular and sublingual gland parasympathetic innervation
Preganglionic: chorda tympani (CN VII)
- passes through the middle ear and merges with the lingual nerve
Synapse: submandibular ganglion
Postganglionic: fibers travel with the lingual nerve (CN V3)
Submandibular and sublingual gland sympathetic innervation
Postganglionic fibers travel with the external carotid artery
(Vasoconstrict)
Lacrimal gland parasympathetic innervation
Preganglionic: greater petrosal nerve (CN 7)
Synapse: pterygopalatine ganglion
Postganglionic: fibers join maxillary nerve (CN V2), travel with the zygomatic nerve, then join the lacrimal nerve (CN V1)
Lacrimal gland sympathetic innervation
Postganglionic fibers travel with the internal carotid artery
Connect with the deep petrosal nerve and then the nerve of the pterygoid canal
Meet the lacrimal nerve (CN V1) via the maxillary nerve (CN V2)
Ciliary muscle and sphincter of the pupil sympathetic innervation
Postganglionic fibers travel in the internal carotid plexus
Follow the ophthalmic artery
Pass through the ciliary ganglion
Ciliary muscle and sphincter of the pupil parasympathetic innervation
Preganglionic: oculomotor nerve (CN III)
Synapse: ciliary ganglion
Postganglionic: short ciliary nerves
Minor salivary glands parasympathetic innervation
Preganglionic: greater petrosal (CN VII)
Synapse: pterygopalatine
Postganglionic: greater palatine nerve
