Anatomy & Functions of the Eye Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Iris?
A
- Coloured sheet of muscle
- Which controls the amount of light which enters the eye by changing the size of the pupil
2
Q
What is the Cornea?
A
- Clear area of the sclera
- Which helps to bend light onto the retina
3
Q
What is the Aqueous Humour?
A
- Fluid that fills the front of the eye
- Helps bend light onto the retina
4
Q
What is the Pupil?
A
The hole in the middle of the iris through which light enters the eye
5
Q
What is the lens?
A
- Clear disc
- Which focuses the light onto the retina (giving fine focus)
6
Q
What are the Sensory ligaments?
A
Hold the lens in place & connect it to the ciliary muscles
7
Q
What is the Choroid?
A
- Dark, pigmented layer
- Which absorbs light + stops it being reflected back into the eye
8
Q
What is the Sclera?
A
- Tough, strong outer layer
- Which protects the internal working parts of the eye & has many blood vessels (that supply the retina with food + oxygen)
9
Q
What is the Blind spot?
A
Point at which the optic nerve leaves the eyeball & there’s no retina
10
Q
What is the Fovea?
A
- Small area of the retina
- Which only contains only cones
11
Q
What is the Retina?
A
- Layer of light sensitive cells
- Which send impulses to the optic nerve
12
Q
What is the Vitreous humour?
A
- Jelly-like fluid
- Which helps to keep the shape of the eyeball
- Helps bend light onto the retina
13
Q
What are the ciliary muscles?
A
Change the shape of the lens when they contract
14
Q
What is the eyelid?
A
Protects the eye from physical harm
