Vertebral cavity
Closed cavity containing the spinal cord, it’s coverings, blood vessels and nerve roots. Contiguous with the cranial cavity, it is lined by dura mater, a fibrous membrane.
Cranial cavity
A closed body cavity containing the brain, it’s coverings, nerves and blood vessels. Lined by dura mater, a fibrous membrane that runs into the vertebral cavity.
Thoracic cavity
Closed chest cavity containing the lungs, heart, and other chest structures, lined by bones, the diaphragm, and a membranous roof. Separated into discrete left and right parts, lined with pleura and containing the lungs.
Abdominopelvic cavity
Closed cavity containing the gastrointestinal tract and related glands, the urinary tract, and related vessels. Lined at the top by the thoracic diaphragm. Consists of the abdominal cavity (upper gastrointestinal) and pelvic cavity (bladder, rectum lower GI).
Open visceral cavities
Tubular tracts or visceral organs that open to the outside of The body. They include the respiratory tract, digestive tract, and urinary tract. The cavities are lined with mucosa.
