Anatomy - systems Flashcards
Articular system
System of fixed and moveable joints
Skeletal system
System of bones and the ligaments that secure those bones to each other at joints.
Muscular system
System of skeletal and other muscles that give form to the body.
Cardiovascular system
System of the heart, arteries, capillaries and veins that move blood and other products (including nutrients and gases) around the body and to and from the tissues.
Lymphatic system
System for moving non-blood fluid from tissues to the heart that runs separately to the veins. The fluid is filtered at (lymph) nodes.
Endocrine system
A system of glands that secrete hormones into the tissue fluids and blood. Hormones help maintain homeostasis in many organs and systems.
Integumentary system
System of the skin, including glands, sensory receptors, vessels, immune cells, antibodies and layers of cells and keratin that resist environmental factors harmful to the body.
Respiratory system
System of the respiratory tract that enables oxygen to enter the body and carbon dioxide to leave. Consists of upper (nose to larynx) and lower (trachea to alveoli) respiratory tracts.
Digestive system
System of the alimentary canal and associated glands (liver, pancreas, gall bladder). Food enters, is broken down, and nutrients are removed.
Urinary system
System of blood filtration to maintain water conservation and a neutral acid-base balance. Blood is filtered through the kidneys, and residual fluid and waste products are excreted as urine.
Immune system
The system of organs involved in defending the body against invasive threats, and removing damaged or abnormal body cells.
Female reproductive system
System of female sex organs that secrete hormones, produces and germ cells (ova (and sperm)) to the fertilization site, and maintain the embryo/fetus until birth.
Male reproductive system
System of organs in the he male that secrete hormones, produces and maintains sperm, and transports those sperm into the female genital tract.
