Anatomy: Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Artery - Arterioles
thick walled vessel
carries blood away from the heart
smaller branches- arterioles
Vein - Venules
Vessels that carry blood towards the heart
valves to prevent backflow
thinner than arteries
smaller branches- venules
Right Ventricle
receives blood from right atrium
send deoxygenated blood THROUGH pulmonary valve to pulmonary artery
finally to lungs where gas exchange occurs
Pulmonary Veins
only veins in the body that carry oxygenated blood
Tricuspid Valve
between the right atrium and right ventricle
Function blood has within the body?
Carries essential oxygen and nutrients to cells
eliminating cell waste
Left Ventricle
receives blood from left atrium
**sends oxygenated blood THROUGH aortic valve **
(which branches to smaller arteries throughout the body)
What layers make up the heart?
1.Pericardium (outermost layer, surrounds heart and secretes pericardial fluid)
2. Epicardium (outermost layer)
3. Myocardium (middle, thickest, muscular layer)
4.Endocardium (inner most layer, electrical conduction system)
Endocardium
inner most layer of cells
line atria, ventricles, heart valves
Capillary
smallest blood vessels
connect venules to arterioles
exchange oxygen and nutrients between blood and cells
Top chambers of the heart?
Right and Left Atria
Bottom chamber of the heart?
Right and Left Ventricles
Left Atrium
receives oxygenated blood FROM pulmonary veins
Right Atrium
receives deoxygenated blood from vena cava
Heart
pump and move blood throughout the body
